The Great Gate
Where worlds collide.
Tremble before the footsteps of the gods.
The Great Gate is the largest known interplanar continuum point in the Materium. Such gates are exceedingly rare, sustained by unknown forces and formed only where the fabric of the mortal world weakens against the shrouding plane of Death that encircles the universe. When these fractures align with deeper cosmic cycles, a lasting rift is torn open between the physical realm and the higher dimensions beyond.
Reality bends in the presence of the Gate. Gravity loosens, time slows, and light warps into impossible forms. Through its vast opening, different planes may be glimpsed depending on the hour, the season, or even the soul of the viewer. Yet such revelations are perilous, for mortal minds are not made to witness eternity without cost.
The Great Gate stands in the heart of Hesperidia, an arid mountain land bordered by Human realms. It is watched over by ancient monastic orders sworn to guard pilgrims seeking salvation. Around the holy mountain of the Golden Spire, temples and sacred towns of many faiths have risen, each carefully partitioned after centuries of bitter religious conflict. All who travel there hope to witness their god, its servants, or some sign of destiny.
Yet the Gate is not known for stability. Its size, power, and connected realms shift across the ages, and every phase is meticulously recorded in sacred annals. In recent centuries it has lain relatively dormant. Prophecy declares that its next great awakening draws near, and with it, the beginning of a new age.
The Silent Wardens
Ascended Keepers of the Great Gate
The Silent Wardens were historic planar beings said to dwell in the shadow of the The Great Gate during its ages of greatest power. Towering and motionless, they were described as semi celestial figures whose many faces bore expressions of stony resolve. Their purpose was singular: to watch the Gate, preserve its sanctity, and stand as the first defense against whatever emerged from beyond.
Unlike angels, demons, or other manifested entities, the Silent Wardens did not assume true material forms. They could exist only near the Great Gate while it remained active, lingering close enough to the breach that they were never fully severed from the higher realms. In this way, they stood with one foot in eternity and one in the mortal world.
Ancient legend claims the Silent Wardens were not born as planar beings at all, but were once mortals elevated into immortal forms. These chosen few belonged to the greater order of beings known as Ascendants, souls transformed beyond death into higher existence. Though touched by powers beyond comprehension, the Wardens held allegiance to no single deity or plane, obeying only the sacred duty laid upon them.
Across the world, Ascendancy is regarded as one of the highest aspirations of the faithful. Saints, prophets, conquerors, sages, and figures of extraordinary devotion are often believed to rise after death into the outer planes, where they take on new immortal forms in service to powers beyond the mortal realm. Some are said to join Elysium as radiant celestials, others to descend into Perdition as dreadful lords, while stranger paths are whispered to lead into The Vortex and realms yet unknown. Whether these tales are truth, allegory, or pious hope remains a matter of endless debate.
No Silent Warden walks the world today. Their watch posts stand empty, their likenesses worn by sand and time, and their presence survives only in scripture and broken stone. Yet scholars of prophecy warn that the Wardens have always appeared before ages of planar upheaval. Should they return, it would herald the opening moves of the next great cosmic clash.
Lesser Gates
Opening Lesser Gates is perilous work, seldom suited for novice witches or wizards.
Lesser Gates are mortal made openings between the Materium and the planes beyond. Unlike the Great Gates of legend, these rifts are smaller, unstable, and often temporary, taking many forms depending on the magic that birthed them. Some appear as hidden doors leading to secret realms of gnomes and spirits. Others open as fiery maws through which demons bring ruin and war.
Most Lesser Gates require a continual flow of power to remain open. Mana, sacrifice, focused ritual, or environmental forces must sustain the breach, and once that energy fails, the gate collapses. For this reason, a self maintaining portal such as the Great Gate is regarded as one of the strangest and most studied phenomena in existence.
Such gates exist because passage into the Materium is not freely granted. Though planar beings may possess immense power, most cannot simply enter or leave the mortal world at will. Between the Materium and eternity lies the vast shroud of Death, a cold void that strips mortals down to soul alone and forms a protective barrier around creation.
For mortals, descent through Death is easy, as natural as falling downhill. To return in the opposite direction is another matter entirely. The upward path has been shaped by cosmic design to be as difficult as possible.
Because of this, entities of The Vortex and Perdition require the aid of mortals to cross the threshold. Wizards, witches, and cultists complete the bridge through ritual, sacrifice, stormcraft, and forbidden pacts. Mortals provide the final push into physical form, as well as the mana required to sustain it.
Only the celestials of Elysium seem capable of manifesting unaided, leading many scholars to believe the Materium itself was first shaped by their hand.
Thus every summoning circle, infernal covenant, and Vortex breach is more than a spell. It is the forging of a new gate through which power, wonder, and horror may enter the world.
